Common Name Fine-Haired Yellow Lady's Slipper - The Large Yellow Ladie's Slipper
Flower Size Up to 6 1/2" usually considerably smaller
This species is a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial that blooms in the spring and summer on a terminal, slender stalked, inflorescence that has a single flower arising from the center of the semi-mature leaves and is found from Quebec and Newfoundland then south to Georgia and west to New Mexico and Arizona as well as temperate Asia and Europe in woodlands, swamps and bogs and rocky wooded slopes and in marshes where it is found on limestone in shaded woodlands.
The roots were used as a tea for nervousness and anxiety as well as outright madness in the mid 1800's.
