Common Name The Southern Danhatchia - In New Zealand The Waipoua Orchid

Found in New Zealand in forests nearly always beneath Taraire or Nikau trees as a mycoheterotrophic, miniature sized, cool growing,leafless terrestrial with pinkish to dark brown stems carrying to 7 mushroom coloured scale leaves along the stem, those lower on the stem half-tubular, those higher up open sheathed that blooms in the late spring and summer on an erect, to 6" [15 cm] long, pubescent, 1 to 5 flowered inflorescence carrying glandular pubescent flowers and can survive for years beneath the soil until favorable growing conditions arise.
