Found in the Philippines on Mindanao Island in shady, mossy dipterocarp forests at elevations around 1300 meters as a small to just medium sized, cool growing epiphyte with erect, clustered, conical to ovate, wrinkled pseudobulbs enveloped by cataphyls and carrying a single, leathery, lanceolate, rounded apically, adaxially and abaxially glabrous, margins entire, lateral veins parallel, adaxially absent, abaxially flattened, 3-nerved on both sides, cuneate below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the late winter and early spring on synanthous, cylindrical, racemose, upright, pendent, peduncle acicular, 10.08" [27 cm] long, rachis spiral, decurrent, up to 42 flowered inflorscence with ovate, 13-nerved, persistent, involute, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carryingresupinate, mildly fragrant flowers that first open from the base of the rachis,

"Dendrochilum derekcabactulanii is most similar to Ddc. hampelii Sulistyo, Gravendeel, R. Boos and Cootes but differs in the shape of the apices of the floral segments, which in Ddc. derekcabactulanii are acute, whereas those of Ddc. hampelii are rounded; the flowers of Ddc. derekcabactulanii are considerably smaller at .24" [6 mm] across the lateral sepals, whereas those of Ddc. hampelii are more than .52" [1.3 cm] across the lateral sepals."
