Found in Sumatra at elevations of 1400 to 2200 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with a short freely branching rhizome giving rise to close set, long-ovoid, abruotly narrowing towards the apex pseudobulb carrying a single, apical, linear-lanceoalte, jnarrowing towards the apex, thin petioalte base leaf that blooms on a thin peduncle, 4.8 to 7" [12 to 17.5 cm] long, rachis zig-zag, laterally flattened, glabrous, 4.8 to 7" [12 to 17.5 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence carrying fragrant flowers

J J Smith stated that D appendiculatum was close to D barbifrons but has shorter and more crowded pseudobulbs, narrower leaves, differntly colored flowers with acuminate sepals and petals, a trilobed lip and the stelids are linear not subulate.
