Found in northern Borneo in montane forests, in scrub on ridges and on granite substrates at elevations of 1700 to 3200 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte or lithophyte with crowded, ovoid to obpyriform, rugose, orange yellow to red pseduobulbs carrying a single, dark olive green, linear-lanceolate, obtuse to subacute, apiculate, attenuate at each end, 3 nerved, gradually narrowing below into the sulcate, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the winter ona gently curving to pendent, slender, terete, quadrangular, 4" to 9.4" [10 to 23.5 cm] long, subdensely many flowered inflorescence with 1 to 3, ovate-elliptic, acute bracts and ovate, acute, 3 nerved floral bracts
Similar to the Philippine D graciiscapum but D alatum has large elliptical stelida which superficially resemble side lobes of the lip. D corrugatum differs in the wider, fimbriate lip. D pterogyne is similar but D alatum differs in the larger flowers with a lip usually broadest at the middle and a longer column with narrower stelida.
