Found in Sumatra at elevations around 1750 to 2600 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with about .4" [1 cm] between eachoval to ovoid, set at an acute angle to the rhizome pseudobulbs carrying lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, abruptly narrowing near the apex, apiculate, leathery, abruptly contracted below into the channeled, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter on a laterally flattened, 9.4" [23.5 cm] long, quadrangular in cross-section, fine haired below several flowered inflorescence with persistent, obovate floral bracts.

J J Smith put D basale close to D fruticicola but D basale has truncate and dentate side lobes to the lip and pseudobulbs that are shorter in proportion to the width.
