Found in the Leewards, Windwards, Trinidad and Tobago, Surinam, French Guiana, Guyana and Venezuela in tall forests at elevations of 800 to 1300 meters as a small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with a clump of suberect to erect in youth, pendent with age, leafy stems enveloped by leaf sheath bases carrying small, fleshy, distichous, deciduous, velvety brown green, deeply sulcate, mucronate leaves that blooms on an axillary, near terminal leaves, shorter than the leaves, single flowered inflorescence.

There has been much confusion over this species and D rendelei but the main differnence is D rendelei is a smaller plant and has the ventral side of the column being concave and does not have a elongate hook-like ligule.
