Found in Java, Moluccas, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, northern and central Taiwan, Fiji, Niue, New Caledonia, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futna, the Carolinas and the Marianas in wet rain forest, Bamboo plantations and in seasonally drought forests at elevations of 100 to 300 meters as a mini-miniature to small sized, hot growing, mycoheterotrophic terrestrial with a pale brown, fusiform to moniliform rhizome giving rise to a pale brown to whitish stem that blooms in the spring on an erect, 2.4 to 12" [6 to 30 cm] long, rachis .8 to 2" [2 to 5 cm] long, 8 to 15 flowered inflorescence with ovate floral bracts and carrying flowers that do not open well.
