Common Name Jimenez's Encyclia [Costa Rican Botanist 1900's]

Found in Costa Rica in cloud forests at elevations of 800 to 2500 meters as a miniature sized warm to cold growing epiphyte with an erect, sometimes branching stem enveloped completely by imbricate leaf bearing sheaths and each carrying, coriaceous, ovate-oblong, obtuse, unequally bilobed apically leaves that blooms in the summer and fall on a terminal, distichous, .8 to 1.2" [2 to 3 cm] long, few flowered racemose inflorescence rarely a fwe branched panicle supported on a short peduncle .24" [6 mm] long, with lanceolate-ovate to ovate, compressed, cucullate, scarious, sphacelate, imbricated, floral bracts and carrying white flowers with dark scales on the sepals and on the ovaries, lip apically violet.

"Similar to Elleanthus dressleri but it has and unlobed lip with the presence of a pair of fleshy appendices below the callus cavities, E jimenezii has an unornamented unlobed lip. The leaves of E jimenezii are ovate-elliptic and those of E dressleri are broadly lanceolate and E dressleri is found in premontane forests while E jimenezii occurs in high mountains."
