Common Name The Hops-Like Elleanthus

Found in Merida state of Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru at elevations around 2800 to 3300 meters as a giant sized, cold growing epiphyte or terrestrial with erect, canelike, leafy above stems basally enveloped by remnants of old leaf sheaths and carrying lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, long-acuminate, plicate, rigid leaves that blooms in the summer on a terminal, to 4" [10 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence arising through a foliaceous sheath and carrying shortly pedunculate rose purple flowers with linear-lanceolate, acuminate surpassing the flowers floral bracts.

"Similar to E ensatus but separated by the length/width ratio of the leaf which is 10 times in E ensatus and 5 to 7 times in E lupulinus. The form of the lip calli also differs in E ensatus they are free from each other and in E lupulinus callis are connate together at the apex forming a "V-Like" structure. Also similar and often confused with E maculatus but differ in the lip callii. In E maculatus the corpuscules are decurrent apically onto the disc, while in E ensatus they are not.
