Common Name Otiz's Elleanthus [Padre Pedro Ortiz Colombian Lazaran monk and Orchid Botanist 2012]

Flower Size .24" [6 mm]

Found in Putumayo department of Colombia at elevations around 2800 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with erect, leafy stems carrying plicate, narrowly-lanceolate to ovate, acuminate, often squeezed in the apical part, margins minutely serrate leaves that blooms in the spring and summer on a terminal, to 1.8 to 2.4" [4.5 to 6 cm] long, glabrous, slightly fractiflex, densely few flowered inflorescence with ovate, acuminate, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying red flowers.

"Similar to E bifarius but differs in the loose floral bracts that are slightly longer than the flowers versus densely imbricating floral bracts that distinctly far exceed the flowers in length. The sepals of E ortizianus are externally furfuraceous versus entirely glabrous in E bifarius. The petals of the new species are shjarply acute apically versus rounded, The lip disc is ornamented with a fleshy ridge between the basal cavity and the lip blade. In E bifarius the thickenig is present but much more delicate. the lip of E bifarius in general outline is subquadrate and deeply bilobed with lacerate-dentate margins while e ortizianus it is transversely elliptic-ovate with an emarginate apex and irregularly denticulatemargins. Also the gymnoiostemium is longer in in eE ortizianus [.36" [9mm long instead of .2" [5 mm] long in E bifarius." Szlatchetko & Kolanowska 2023
