Common Name The Monte Verde Encyclia [An area of Guantanamo Province Cuba]

Flower Size to about 1.2" [to about 3 cm]

Found in Guantanamo Province of Cuba without locational data as a medium sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with ovoid pseudobulbs enveloped by scarious sheaths in youth and carrying 1 to 3, apical, erect, coriaceous, oblong-lanceolate, acute acuminate leaves that blooms on a terminal, stout, peduncle to [85 cm] long, rachis to 12" [30 cm] long, paniculate, each branch [16 to 26 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence.

"Based on the form of the labellum, this species is closely related to E. oxypetala, but one may distinguish the two by the robust plants of E. monteverdensis which have very large pseudobulbs. Furthermore, the flowers of E. monteverdensis have perianth parts that are much wider, and the mid lobe is very obviously undulate-crispate. The plant habit of E. monteverdensis and the form of the sepals and petals are reminiscent of E. ochrantha A. Richard, but the mid lobe of the labellum in the latter is broader than long and the apex is acute rather than awn-like as in E. monteverdensis." M.A.Díaz & Ackerman 2004
