Common Name Oestlund's Encyclia [Swedish Orchid Collector in Mexico 1900's]
Flower Size .8 to .92" [2 to 2.3 cm]
Found in Guerrero state of Mexico in the dry coastal areas at elevations around 1100 meters as a small sized, cool growing epiphyte or lithophyte with close set, 2 ranked, conical-ovoid,, longitudinally sulcate when mature pseudobulbs carrying 2, apical, elliptic-ligulate,leathery, bsally conduplicate leaves that blooms in the late spring and summer on an erect, terminal, racemose or paniculate, 1 to 2 branched in the middle part, to 24" [60 cm] long, provided with a few, scarious, inconspicuous bracts, to 70 flowered inflorescence carrying fragrant flowers.
"As In many other similar species, this species has obovoid-conical pseudobulbs wih 2, apical, coriaceous leaves and a terminal, generally paniculate inflorescence. This one is distinguished by the free, wingless column that is short to .24" [6 mm]. The lip is trilobed with the mid lobe being magenta, and the nerves are larger and higher but smooth and acuminate. The rest of the similar species have red veins on a base of yellow. The lateral lobes are wider than the mid lobe is long and are separated by a wide, yellow, brown-veined sinus. The fragrance of the flowers is soapy and spicy." Hágsater & Stermitz 1983
