Common Name The Cylindric Inflorescence with The Narrow Leaves Epidendrum

Found in north central Ecuador in cloud forests at elevations of 1700 to 2000 meters as a medium sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with an erect, simple, cane-like, laterally compressed above stem almost completely enveloped by 2 basal sheaths below and carrying 4, all along the upper 1/3 of the stem, coriaceous, oblong-elliptic-lanceolate, aristate, margin entire leaf that blooms in the winter on a terminal, racemose, laterally compressed, 6" [15 cm] long, 20 flowered inflorescence with much shorter the ovary, triangular, acute bract and carrying pendent, simultaneously opening, resupinate greenish white flowers.
"Epidendrum cylindrostenophyllum belongs to the GROUP Cylindraceum characterized by the sympodial habit, narrow spathaceous bracts with parallel sides an erect racemose inflorescence with non-resupinate flowers and a generally reduced, fleshy lip. The sppecies is recognized by its narrow leaves, ca. .4" [1 cm] wide, inflorescence 6" {15 cm] long, small sepals and petals, .14 to .2" [3.5 to 5 mm] long, lateral lobes of the lip retrorse and narrow at the base, transversely elliptic at the apex. It is similar to Epidendrum cylindrostachys Rchb. f. & Warsc. which has a longer inflorescence, larger flowers, the sepals and petals .32 to .4" [8 to 10 mm] long, falcate lateral lobes of the lip. Epidendrum cylindraceum Lindl. has wider leaves, .8 to 1.4" [2 to 3.5 cm] wide, longer inflorescence, falcate lateral lobes of the lip, and a smaller midlobe of the lip." Hagsater etal 2001
