Found in Ecuador on both sides of the Andes at elevations of 2600 to 3000 meters as a medium to large sized, cold growing terrestrial or lithophyte with erect, branching, cane-like stems carrying all along the stem, deciduous below, characteristicly ascending, almost parallel to the stem, elliptic-lanceolate, margins finely erose, those on the main stem larger leaves that blooms at most any time of the year on a terminal, from the main stem or the branches, racemose, erect, without a spathe, occasionally with a basal bract, successively many, numerous flowered inflorescence with prominent, longer than the ovary, gradually shorter above, wide, triangular floral bracts and carrying non-resupiante, fleshy, yellow green, more or less tinged with red flowers.
"Epidendrum orthophyllum is part of GROUP Macrostachyum characterized by the monopodial plants with sub-apical branching, rugose leaf sheaths, large leaves generally spreading, racemose, erect inflorescence, and fleshy flowers generally green to black (ripe olive colored), as well as yellow to pink to purple, with an entire, conduplicate, generally ecallose and pubescent lip embracing the column, and the nectary pubescent to papillose in front of the stigmatic cavity and at least at the base of the lip. The species is recognized by the ascending leaves almost parallel to the stem, the rhombic, acute, 2-veined petals, and the widely triangular lip. Epidendrum oxycalyx Hágsater & Dodson has narrower, acuminate floral segments. Epidendrum palaciosii Hágsater & Dodson has flowers about 1/3 the size, the sepals muriculate outside, without keels.
