Found in Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria on river banks and in pine plantations on sandy substrate in partial shade at elevations of 100 to 1600 meters as a small to large sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with spindley, densely hairy towards the stem apex with cauline, oval lanceoalte, near erect, undulate margined leaves in 2 opposite rows that blooms on an erect, terminal, laxly many [50 to 70] flowered inflorescence arising in the late spring and early summer.
