Found in Ethiopia, Somalia, Cyprus, Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, China, Assam, eastern Himalayas, India, Nepal, Western Himalayas, Bhutan, Pakistan and Myanmar in forests and in forest margins at elevations of 2700 to 3400 meters as a small to large sized, cold growing terrestrial with an erect, flexuous densely leafy stem carrying alternate, ovate-lanceolate, acute, papery, sessile leaves that are basally clasping that blooms on an arching, terminal, 8 to 14" [20 to 35 cm] long, minutely pubescent, densely many flowered inflorescence with nodding flowers arising in the late winter and spring.
