Found in Cusco department of Peru and Cochabamba department of Bolivia in montane subtropical forests at elevations of 1800 to 2300 meters as a small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with simple, cane-like, laterally compressed stems carrying 3 to 7, distichous, linear, mucronate, clear green leaves that blooms in the summer on a terminal, shortly pedunculate, paniculate, arching, reflexed, 4.8 to 6" [12 to 15 cm] long, numerous flowered inflorescence with minute floral bracts and carrying resupinate, cupped flowers with greenish yellow, brown spotted petals and sepals, a dark yellow lip and a greenish yellow column with purple marks.

"Epidendrum roncanum is part of GROUP Amblostoma SUBGROUP Amblostomioides characterized by the caespitose habit, the thinly fusiform stems carrying narrow, apically bilobed, subcoriaceous leaves distributed towards the apical half of the stem that blooms on an often large, apical, erect, paniculate infloresence carrying greenish yellow to white flowers with a 3 lobed lip and with the ovaries and sepals usually dorsally pubescent has a paniculate inflorescence and the 3-lobed lip has a long, spatulate midlobe. Epidendrum opiranthizon has a caespitose habit, racemose inflorescence without a spathe or bracts at the base of the peduncle, small flowers opening from the apex of the raceme backwards, and entire, subrhombic lip with three fleshy keels on the basal half."
