Found in Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia and Angola in wet grasslands, marshes and swamps at elevations of 1200 to 1500 meters as a medium to giant sized, cool growing terrestrial with subteranean tuberous organs giving rise to a cylindrical, fleeshy rhizome carrying 4, erect, plicate, linear, acuminate, long petiolate base leaves that blooms in the spring and early summer on an erect, 3.6 to 16" [9 to 40 cm] long, several loose bracted, laxly few flowered inflorescence with lanceolate-ovate, acute floral bracts and carrying spreading to subnutant flowers.
