Found in southwestern and southern Cape Province South Africa in coastal sands at elevations of sealevel to 850 meters as a small to large sized, cold growing terrestrial with a subterranean tuberlike rhizome giving rise to vestigal or without leaves that blooms in the spring through early summer on an erect, 8.8 to 36" [22 to 90 cm] long, rather laxly 6 to 27 flowered inflorescence
