Found in Pastaza province of Ecuador and Peru in primary forests at elevations around 1000 meters as a large sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial or epiphyte with numerous, lanceolate, erect leaves that blooms in the winter on a terminal, erect, to 14" [35 cm] long, laxly many flowered inflorescence with leafy sut shorter than the ovary floral bracts.
Similar to H alterosula but differs in the shape of the petals which are bilobed just above the base while in H alterosula they are distinctly bipartite above the base, the spur of H abortiens in 1.52" [38 mm] long while in H alterosula it is .8 to 1.08" [20 to 27 mm] long, and the length of the lobes of the lip in H abortiens are .16 x .028" [4 x .07 mm] versus .36 x .064" [9 x 1.6 mm] in H alterosula."
