Common Name The Winged Habenaria

Flower Size .8" [2 cm]

Found in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, Trinidad, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Surinam, Ecuador and Peru in wet montane cloud forests at elevations of 600 to 2100 meters as a medium to large sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial or lithophyte with simple, laterally compressed stems carrying many, distichous, lanceolate, conduplicate, all along the stem, progressively decreasing upwards, acuminate leaves that have around 1.6" [4 cm] between each that blooms in the fall on an erect, racemose, 8" [20 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, usually longer than the ovary floral bracts.

"Habenaria alata can be confused with Habenaria magistrae , but it has plants that are more slender; a less dense inflorescence; Ringing perigonium; apex from the petals acute to subobtuse, stigmatic processes cover the basal atria of the labellum; the labellum is subpatent, lanceolate-linear, and gradually attenuated and the spur is as long as the ovary. Another related species is Habenaria brevilabiata but the epiphytic habit of it separates them immediately, and the tubercle is pubescent; the leaves are spread and the largest are located below the middle of the plant; the labellum is pendant and cylindrical nectary, without dilation in the distal part, and in details of the spine." Jorge Roberto González Tamayo y Lizbeth Hernández Hernández 2010
