Found in Jalisco state of Mexico in open oak forests at elevations around 1950 meters as a small sized, cool growing terrestrial with more or less 7, cauline, coriaceous, adpressed, lower elliptic, grading larger above till the middle where the become lanceolate and then grading smaller above leaves that blooms in the later summer on an erect, terminal, peduncle exposed in sections at the top, cylindrical, thin, with scales, rachis 2" [5 cm] long, cylindric, somewhat dense, to 8 flowered inflorescence with conduplicate, shallowly concave, triangular-lanceolate, attenuate from below the middle, acuminate, with a carina, much longer than the flowers below, as long a s the ovary above floral bracts.
Habenaria cortesii is closely related to
H. pseudofilifera with straight leaves on a regularly spaced stem, graduated uoward from the larger basalleaves, the first elliptic, narrow, lanceolate leaves are the largest up to 1.8 long by .56 wide " [4.5 cm long by 1.4 cm] wide, subdense raceme, the bracts of the first flowers exceeding the ovary the upper sepal is truncated with an elliptical posterior sepal apiculate, edges glandular, lateral sepals obliquely ovate lanceolate ca. .28" long x .12" wide[7 mm long 3 mm wide], petals posterior lobe triangular-falcate acuminate 1.76 x .06" [4.4 mm 1.5 mm], anterior lobe acute-rounded ca. .28" [7 mm] long, the lip is obtrapeziform with rounded lateral lobes, an oblong central lobe at the distal end, attenuated rounded
