Found in Cameroon, Gulf of Guinea Islands, Zaire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and Yemen in upland grasslands among bracken at elevations of 2000 to 3800 meters as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with 4 to 7, very unequal, 1 to 2 basal, lanceolate-oblong, grading smaller above to bract-like leaves that blooms in the summer and early fall on an erect, slender, to 6.4" [16 cm] long, rather lax, to 20 flowered inflorescence with longer than the flowers, black apically floral bracts carrying flowers in a single spiral row.
