Found in the western Himalayas, Assam, Bangladesh, India, the eastern Himalayas, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, New Guinea, the Philippines, China, Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan in primary evergreen forests at elevations of 500 to 2000 meters as a medium to large sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial with 6 to 10 cauline, forming a central cluster on the stem, elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate leaves that blooms in the summer and earlier fall on an erect, terminal, rachis 1.6 to 4.6" [4 to 14 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, longer than the flowers floral bracts and carrying green, pale green to rarely white flowers.
CAUTION Lindley described 2 different species in the same publication with the name H stenopetala. This species has a much wider range than H rhynchocarpa which is the valid name for the secondly described H stenopetala and it only occurs in the Indian Subcontinent.
