Common Name The Insignificant Habenaria

Flower Size 1.2" [3 cm]

Found in Guyana, Fr Guiana, Surinam and northern and central Brazil in open grasslands at elevations up to 1000 meters as a small sized, hot to warm growing terrestrial with a oblong, subterranean tuber giving rise to an erectslender, delicate stem carrying 2 to 10, remotely spaced, larger below, erect-patent, linear, acute, basally clasping leaves grading above to 3 remotely spaced, ovate bracts that blooms in the later spring on a terminal, erect, 1.6 to 2.4" [4 to 6 cm] long, distantly 1 to 2 flowered inflorescence with ovate, acute, as long as to shorter than and clasping the ovary floral bracts and carrying glabrous flowers.

+"In the general morphology of the flowers this species is similar to H. trifida, but distinct by the vegetative parts. In H. macilenta the plants are usually more slender and shorter (13-43 cm tall vs. (24-)40-76(-94) cm tall in H. trifida), the leaves 4-10 x 0.4-1.1 cm (vs. 9-20 x 0.9-2 cm in H. trifida), the larger leaves are usually on the lower part of the stem (vs. the larger leaves concentrated on the middle of the stem in H. trifida) and the internodes usually larger than the leaves (vs. smaller with the internodes usually covered by the leaves in H. trifida). Other differences are the the shorter pedicel (1.5-3 cm long vs. 3-9.5 cm in H. trifida), the color of the petals and lip (yellowish vs. white in H. trifida) and column structure (Batista & Bianchetti 2002). Sepals are green and the petals and lip yellowish. The species grows in marshes or seasonally humid places."
