Found in Nigeria, Zaire, Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia in grasslands and open areas of woodlands at elevations of 600 to 2100 meters as a medium to large sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with ellipsoid to almost globose tuber giving rise to an erectr, rather stout, leafy throughout stem carrying 8 to 14, the lowermost, 2 to 4 sheathlike, the middle ones, more or less spreading, lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate to oblanceolate, acute, basally clasping, the uppermost grading into bract-like leaves that blooms in the later summer and early fall on a terminal, erect, 4 to 12" [10 to 30 cm] long, rather densely many flowered inflorescence and carrying sometimes fragrant flowers .
