Found in Durango state of Mexico in open woods of pine/oak at elevations around 2530 meters as a small sized, cold growing terrestrial with a vertical, oblong-ellipsoid, wrinkled tuber giving rise to an erect, naked beteen the leaves, ribbed stem carrying 10, leathery, rectilinear, imbricate, evenly distributed, sheathing, the first with a short, attached blade, in the two that follow the blade ascending or erect, elliptical, obtuse rounded, a erect or adpresate, lanceolate, acuminate, the largest located below the middle of the plant, seven nerves raised in carinas, the central most prominent, the hyaline borders; the sheaths very infundibuliform, short leaves, that blooms in later summer on an erect, terminal, somewhat robust, sinuous, 2.8" [7 cm] long long, in a loose cylindrical cluster, 8 flowered inflorescence with conduplicate, concave, hides most of the ovary, ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, longewr than the ovary floral bracts.
"Habenaria protusorostrata looks like a H. cualensis but differs in that all the sheaths produce a blade, the first with a short, attached blade, in the two that they follow ascending to erect lamina; the floral bract well exceeds the ovary; the anterior lobe of the petals is .4" [10 mm] long, .02" [0.5 mm] wide, the posterior lobe of the petals is .28" [7 mm] long, .06" [1.5 mm] wide; the nectary is free of the floral bract. H. cualensis has the basal leaves extended, when ascending erect; floral bract as long as the ovary or exceeds it little; anterior segment of the petals twice as long as the posterior lobe and the linear-claviform nectary adpressed and equal to the ovary."
