Common Name Ruiz's Habenaria [Mexican Collecor of the type species current]

Found in Jalisco and possibly in Nyarit and Durango states of Mexico in rocky volcanic soils in pine/oak forests at elevations of 2200 to 2500 meters as a small to medium sized, cool growing terrestrial with vertical, ovoid, finely wrinkled tubers giving rise to an erect, thin stem carrying a few, cauline, spirally arranged, sheaths not imbricate, the majority found in the middle part, decrease in sized both down and up; extended, arched, rounded, lanceolate, acuminate blade, the largest 1.48 to 2" [3.7 to 5 cm] long, .3 to .64" [7.5 to 16 mm] wide, colored emerald green, the hyaline margins, the sheath dilated slightly towards the apex, in essence trinervia, the veins decurrent in the sheath and in the stem, furrowed, fleshy leaves that blooms in the late summer on an erect, terminal, in a loose, unilateral or somewhat helical shape, 2.32 to 4.4" [5.8 to 11 cm] long, 5 to 8 flowered inflorescence with conduplicate, lanceolate, acuminate, green, trinervia, furrowed, fleshy, the keel prominent, exceeds and hides the ovary and the spur floral bract.

"Habenaria ruizii is also related to H. felipensis but differs in the extended or ascending leaf blades, with the distal part retroflex, .8 to 1.52" [2 to 3.8 cm] long, .28 to .8" [7 to 20 mm] wide; the ovate dorsal sepal, .2 to .252" [5 to 6.3 mm] long, .16 to .176" [4 to 4.4 mm] wide; the posterior lobe of petals from .16 to .226" [4to 5.6 mm] long; the anterior lobe .16 to .2" [4 to 5 mm] long; side lobes of the labellum .26" 6.5 mm long, slightly shorter than the middle lobe; the middle lobe .26 to .3" [6.5 to 7.5 mm] long, .06" [1.5 mm] wide and the spur blade, .38 to .4" [9.5 to 10 mm] long, that is inflated in at the apex."
