Common Name The Bristly Habenaria

Flower Size 1" [2.5 cm]

Found in Minas Gerias state of Brazil, French Guiana, Surinam and Venezuela in grasslands, open scrub , low woodlands and marshy areas at elevations around 600 to 1675 meters as a small to medium sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial with a slender, delicate, flexuous stem carrying short, grass-like, straight, narrow, acute, strongly amplexicaul, basally clasping leaves decreasing in size above that blooms in the fall on a narrow, 1.6 to 3.6" [4 to 9 cm] long, laxly 2 to 10 flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, shorter to a bit longer than the ovary floral bracts.

H stacea is easily distinguishable by its filiform anterior petal lobe which is 2 to 3 times longer than the posterior one. Similar form of petals and ratio between anterior/posterior lobe scan be found in H armata but that species leaves are wider .08 to .12" v [2 to 3 mm] versus .24 to .6" [6 to 15 mm]. Also similar in habit and can be confused with H schomburgkii but can be separated by the peculiar rostellum middle lobe and the patent leaves versus adpressed to the stem. H schomburgkii is distinguishable from H setacea by the much wider leaves, .4" [1 cm] versus .08 to .12" [.2 to .3 mm] wide. Moreover the posterior petal lobe of H schomburgkii is .2 to .24 x .06" [5 to 6 x 1.5 mm] and in H setacea it is .12 to .2 x .12" 3 to 5 x 3 mm]. " Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2017
