Found in Chiapas, D.F., Estado de México, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Sinaloa and Veracruz states of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica in lower wet montane forests at elevations of 500 to 2400 meters as a small to medium sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with an erect stem enveloped basally by slasping non-foliaceous sheaths and carrying well spaced, narrowly elliptic, acute smaller below, middlemost largest and grading smaller above into the bracts that blooms in the fall on a terminal, erect, 7” [17.5 cm] long, racemose, densely to 25 flowered inflorescence with equal to to slightly larger than the ovary floral bracts.

"Habenaria strictissima is related to H. odontopetala , which to date has not been found in our area, but in this one the leaves are not intertwined, at least those below half spread; the lateral sepals are cuneate; the floral bracts are attenuated and acuminate; The petals have a small basal atrium on the anterior side and the apex ends in at least two apicules; the labellum is oblong, rounded, with two triangular basal atria; and the nectary is more or less cylindrical, a little dilated above half and then attenuated and the stelidia are very small.\" Jorge Roberto González Tamayo y Lizbeth Hernández Hernández 2010
