Found in Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia in upland and montane grasslands at elevations of 1800 to 2000 meters as a medium sized, cool growing terrestrial with ovoid to ellipsoid tubers giving rise to a flexuous, leafy stem carrying 8 to 12, the lowermost 2 to 3 are sheath-like and then the intermediate 4 to 6 are lanceolate and acute, and the uppermost leaves are smaller and similar to the bracts all blooming in the late summer on an erect, 4 to 8" [10 to 20 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence with leafy, overlapping, narrowly lanceolate, acuminate bracts that are mostly longer than the flowers
