Common Name The Wavy Edged Leaf Microchilus
Flower Size
Found in Ecuador and Peru at elevations around 2900 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with a stem-like ascendant rhizome becoming erect, straight leafy stem carrying several, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute to subacuminate, more or less rounded below into the petiolate base leaves that blooms in the fall on an erect, terminal, slender, elongate, to 16" [40 cm] long overall, rachis to 4" [10 cm] long, cylindric, loosely several flowered inflorescence with a few remote sheaths and ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying small, fleshy, segments spreading, glabrous flowers.
"Can be confused with Microchilus sytsmae and Microchilus bugabae in having the suborbicular to transversely elliptic lip with obscurely marked apex. Of the three Microchilus sytsmae is characterized by having the smallest flowers, shortest spur and a truncate, very fleshy lip. M crispifolius in contrast to Microchilus bugabae has crispate leaf margins versus wavy margins and a suborbicular to transversely elliptic lip in general outline versus broadly obovate." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2017
CAUTION The Collection sheet depicted above may be incorrectly identified as it was collected in Central Colombia and all references say that this orchid comes only from Ecuador and Peru, nor does the drawing of the lip or the length of the rachis match that in my references.
