toLATE and EARLY

Common Name Gloeden's Laelia [Brazilian Plant Dealer and Collector 20th cen]

Flower Size 2 to 2.4" [5 to 6 cm]

Found in Espirito Santo state of Brazil in the mountains at elevations around 1600 meters as a rare, small to medium sized, cool growing, rupicolous lithophyte with a short, creeping rhizome carrying, clustered, cylindrical, tapering towards the apex pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, erect, elliptic, fleshy leaf that blooms in the northern hemisphere in the late winter and early spring on a terminal, erect to arching, 8 to 16" [10 to 40 cm] long, racemose, laxly to 8 flowered inflorescence that is much longer than the leaf.

Laelia macrobulbosa differed only in the robust, unusually thick, to 2" [5 cm] at the base and as long as 8" [20] cm high pseudobulbs carrying a single, leathery, thick, oblong leaf just as long and carrying a smaller flower on a shorter inflorescence. This was mostly influenced by the light levels, nutrition and water available so not a taxonomic species separation as the plant moved and grown in the more normal manner grew out like the type of L gloediana.
