Found in Ecuador, Peru and Brazil in very wet tropical forests at elevations around 400 meters as a miniature sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with ovoid, 1.2 to 2" [3 to 5 cm] between each pseudobulb enveloped by 3 to 5 foliaceous sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, subulate, fleshy, sulcate leaf that blooms in the winter on a terminal, racemose to subpaniculate, glabrous, to 3.2" [8 cm] long, 8 to 15 flowered inflorescence with a finely pubescent ovary and carrying very small, pale green flowers suffused with pink.
"E. stiliferum Dressler belongs to the GROUP Lanium which is characterized by the rhizomatose plants, the stems cane-like to pseudobulbous, leaves generally aggregate towards the apex, flowers non-resupinate, more or less pubescent, pollinia 2 or 4. The species is recognized by the thicker pseudobulbs, a paniculate, pubescent infloresence about as long as the leaves, sepals .12" [3 mm] long. Epidendrum stangeanum has somewhat repent plants with one or two apical, semi-terete, fleshy leaves on a thin fusiform pseudobulb, the racemose inflorescence shorter than the long leaf, flower small, star-shaped, segments acuminate, ovary and dorsal surface of the sepals mostly pubescent, lip with the basal half transversely elliptic, the apical half triangular, acuminate. It is closely related to E. avicula (Benth.) Lindley which is floraly very similar, but has wide, laminar leaves." Adapted from E stangeanum Icones 13 Plate 1389 Hagsater etal 2010
