Found in the Chinese Himalayas, Thailand, Malayasia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo in moist shady lower montane forests at elevations of 400 to 1300 meters as a medium to just large sized, hot to cool growing, mycoheterotrophic terrestrial with a very slender, brittle, dark red violet to almost black, sometimes branching stem carrying several, small, triangular sheaths and blooms in the late spring on an erect, terminal, to 2.8" [7 cm] long, successively 5 to many flowered inflorescence
