Common Name The Heart Shaped Lip Lepanthes
Flower Size
Found in Zamora-Chinchipe province of Ecuador at elevations around 2200 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cold, pendant growing epiphyte with ramicauls enveloped by a single, ciliate sheath and carrying a single, pendant, distichous, thickly coriaceous, glabrous, broadly ovate, obtuse, abruptly contracted into a petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring on a .2" [6 mm] long, successively 2 to 3 flowered, racemose inflorescence with long ciliate, shorter than the pedicel floral bracts.
"Closely allied to L ciliaris but distinguished by the twice larger flowers with spreading, recurved, purple striped sepals instead of white. Te dorsal sepal is long-pubescent, ovate and narrowed towards the base. The lateral sepals are only microscopically pubescent and the transverse petals are shortly pubescent. The lip is glabrous and cordate with the sides embbracing the column." Luer 2002
