Common Name Nagel's Lepanthes [German Orchid Collector in Mexico 1900's]
Flower Size .32" [8mm]
Found in Oaxaca Mx., 2164m elev., Cerro San Filipe, epiphytic with many other Orchid species
Found in Michoacan, Guerrero, Mexico, Morelos and Oaxaca states of Mexico in oak and pine, humid montane forests and wet cloud forests on banks at elevations of 1900 to 2700 meters as a repent, miniature sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with reclining to pendant ramicauls enveloped by 6 or so lepanthiform sheaths and carrying a single, apical, narrowly elliptic, obtuse to slightly bilobed, gradually narrows below into the base leaf and blooms in the summer and fall on a very short, successively single, to 16 flowered inflorescence.
"This species is a member of the L stenophylla complex but L nagelii is distinguished by the habitat dryer and higher in elevation, the hispid veins of the lepanthiform sheaths with very developed transluscent trichomes that fade in time, the much fleshier leaves, the glabrous or occasionally with a few pappilae floral bracts, the ciliate sepals or at least prominently papilose on the margins and a simle appendix. The most similar species to L nagelii is Lepanthes gabriellae but it is distinguished by the muricate lepanthiform sheaths with shortly conical trichomes, the less fleshy leaves, the muricate floral bracts, the very prominently cylindric, red tinted, ciliate sepals and the laminae of the lip proportionally larger and narrower, flat, glabrous and lustrous."
