Found in Iceland, Ireland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, western Russia, central Russia, eastern Russia, western Siberia, eastern Siberia, Japan, Aluetians, Alaska, Yukon, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchiwan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Labrador, Prince Edward Islands, New Brunswick, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconson, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsyvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Conneticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine in wet mountainous forests or pine bogs in acidic soil as a miniature sized, cool to cold growing terestrial with glabrous then minutely pubescent above stems with basal sheaths carrying 1 to 2, sessile, nearly opposite, ovate-deltate to triangular leaves that blooms in the summer and early fall on an erect, racemose, to 2 2/5" [6 cm] long, [4 to 25] flowered inflorescence with a minute floral bract.
