Found in the Appalachian Mountains of the USA from Pennsylvania to Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina in shady forest, among Rhododendrons, and in ravines with a glabrous below the leaves, pubescent above stem basally enveloped by a few, thin sheaths ansd carrying 2, opposite, midway up the stem, green, broadly ovate to reniform leaves that blooms in the late spring and early summer on an erect, 2 to 10" [5 to 25 cm] long, racemose, laxly to 15 flowered inflorescence.
