Found in Costa Rica and Colombia at elevations of 1100 to 1600 meters as a large sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with with pseudobulbs without spines after leaf-fall and carrying 3 to 4, plicate leaves that blooms in the fall in Costa Rica on an erect to lateral, to 12" [to 30 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence.

The largest of the L macrophylla complex which consists of L dowiana, L fuscina, L guatemalensis, L leucantha, L macrophylla, L panamensis, L puntarenasensis, L x sanderae, L viridescens, L xanthocheila and L xytriophora,
