Found in Malaysia, Java and northern Borneo in montane forests on riverbanks, on forest floors, on rocks or in moss on tree trunksat elevations of 50 to 1500 meters as a small sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial, lithophyte and sometimes epiphyte. that blooms in the spring and summer on an erect, terminal, densely many flowered inflorescence carrying color variable flowers.
This species and M blumei are considered by many to be the same species if so then M blumei takes precedence.
