Found in Durango state of Mexico and Guatemala at elevations around 2400 to 2750 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with 2, oblong-lanceolate, obtuse to subacute, basally clasping leaves that blooms in the later summer on an erect, to 17.2" [43 cm] long overall, rachis to 4.8" [12 cm] long, laxly many flowered inflorescence with triangular, acute floral bracts.
Similar to M ochreata but M nelsonii differs in having a trulliform lip while M ochreata has a saggitate lip
