Found in Zamora Chinchipe province of Ecuador in primary, tropical forests, under the canopy of trees on thin branches among moss and lichens, at elevations around 1100 meters as a small sized, cool growing epiphtye with stout erect, stems enveloped by 2 slender tubular spathaceous sheaths and carrying an erect, semi-coriaceous, obovate-falcate, subacute to acute, gradually narrowing below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the winter and spring on a stout, semi-horizontal peduncle markedly triquetrous with brown maculae, 2.2 to 3.4" [5.5 to 8.5 cm] long, divided with an internode covered by a papyraceous spathe, rachis single flowered inflorescence presenting an aborted floral stipule with bracts whitish turning scarcely greenish at apex, tubular, imbricate, inflated, as long as the pedicel floral bracts.
"The new species belongs to SUBGENUS Polyantha SECTION Alaticaules SUBSECTION Alaticaules [Krzl.] Luer 1986, Similar to Masdevallia cocapatae , but distinguished by the yellow floral caudae, peduncle and ovary densely mottled brown, (vs. flowers with yellow-orange caudae, peduncle and ovary unspotted) labellum with panduriform-spatulate callosity, glandular apex (vs. oblong-panduriform lip, glabrous apex)."
