Common Name Garcia's Masdevallia [Venezuelan Collector of Species]

Found in Falcon state of coastal Venezuela in rain forests at elevations of 1200 to 1500 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cool growing, caespitose epiphytic plant is with a slender, erect ramicaul enveloped by 2, loose, tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical, obtuse leaf that is narrowly cuneate below into the petiole that blooms in the winter and summer an erect, arising from low on the ramicaul with a basal bract, slender, 1.6" to 2" [4 to 5 cm] long, single flowered, inflorescence with a purple dotted, shorter than the pedicel floral bract with the flower held below the leaves.
"Similar to M striatella but M garciae dffers in the more or less triquetrous peduncle. The flowers are distinguished by the slightly shorter, thicker, sepaline tails. The sepaline tubes of both species are yellowish and striped in purple. The marginal folds of the lip are reduced to calli on the dorsum of the distal third. The base of the lip is neither concave nor deeply cleft, while that of M striatella is shallowly concave and notched between thin, rounded, slightly upcurved basal margins." Luer 2000
