Common Name Schlim's Masdevallia [Belgian Orchid Collector 1800's]

Found in Santander and Norte de Santander departments of Colombia and Merida state of Venezuela in cloud forests altitudes of 1800 to 3200 meters often in full sun as a small sized, cold to cool growing, caespitose epiphytic or lithophytic species with stout erect ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths carrying a single, apical, erect, thickly coriaceous, elliptical, obtuse, tridentate apically leaf that is narrowed below into a petiolate base, blooming in the spring and early summer with an erect, arising from near the base of the ramicaul with 2 to 3 distinct bracts, 10 to 15" [25 to 37.5 cm] long, simultaneously 4 to 7 flowered, purple dotted, triquetrous, racemose inflorescence with imbricating, half as long as the pedicel floral bracts holding the flowers at or above leaf height.
M schlimii can be confused with M sceptrum but it has a terete inflorescence, basal processes on the petals, a longer hypochile and no prominent keel on the lip.
