Common Name Ferrusi's Masdevallia [Canadian Orchid Enthusaist current]
Flower Size .8" [2 cm]
Found in Zamora-Chinchipe province of Ecuador at elevations around 2500 meters as a mini-miniature sized, cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with erect, ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, faintly rugose, elliptical, subacute, cuneate below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the late winter on a slender, arising from low on the ramicaul with a bract below the middle, 3.2 to 3.8" [8 to 9.5 cm] long, successively few flowered, racemose inflorescence with imbricating, tubular, inflated, as long as the pedicel floral bracts.
"Superficially similar to M polysticha but differs in all the floral parts. The deeply concave, suborbicular dorsal sepal and twice smaller lateral sepals are marked in dark brown and sparsely long-pubeascent within, weach trichome being mounted upon a minute putule. The apex of the sparsely fringed petals is acute and acuminate. The lip is oblong and pandurate caused by an inversion of the margins that meet near the middle, very unlike and other member of the genus." Luer 2006
