Common Name or Meaning Kiat's Masdevallia [Kiat W. Tan (Singapore, 1943-), Ph.D. in Botany/Plant Biology from the University of Miami, joined The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, where he worked with Calaway H. Dodson and Robert L. Dressler, and then returned to his native country to become Corporate Advisor to the Government of Singapore, The Parks Board and Gardens of the Bay, on matters relating to the creation, development of parks and gardens and green spaces. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of Gardens by the Bay, Singapore]

Found in Zamora Chinchipe province of Ecuador in primary, rainy and cloud forest, at elevations around 1400 meters as a miniature sized, cool growing epiphtye with stout, erect stems enveloped by a single papyraceous, tubular, spathaceous sheaths and carrying an erect, semi-coriaceous, linear, obtuse to semi-acute, retuse emarginate apically, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the fall and winter on a stout, erect, peduncle provided with a papyraceous bract distinctly triquetrous 9.4" [23.5 cm] long, divided into an internode covered by a papyraceous spathe, successively single, few flowered inflorescence with papyraceous, tubular floral bracts.
" The new species belongs to the SUBGENUS Polyantha SECTION Alaticaules SUBSECTION Alaticaules [Krzl.] Luer 1986, similar to Masdevallia cuprea Lindl. 1843, but is distinguished by the plant and flower spike noticeably more elongated (vs. short plant and flower spike not exceeding the leaves), petals emarginate apex, sepals with elongated caudae (vs. petals trilobed apex, sepals with short caudae), lip glabrous (vs. lip glandular apex).."
