Common Name Maduro's Masdevallia [Panamanian Orchid Enthusiast current]

Flower Size 2" [5 cm]

Found in Chiriqui department of Panama at elevations of 1200 meters as a miniature sized, cool growing, caespitose epiphtye with blackish, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apcial, erect, coriaceous, elliptical, subacute, cuneate below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the fall on a slender, arising from low on the ramicaul with a basal bractsuberect, round in cross-section, 2/8 to 3.2" [7 to 8 cm] long, successively several, single flowered inflorescence with thin, slightly longer than the pedicel floral bracts.

"Related to M lata and M thieni but the extremely thin peduncle arises from the base of a ramicaul, the peduncle is about as long as the leaf but because of the weight of the large successive flowers the raceme becomes pedent. The sepals are connate into a cup with the dorsal sepal held forward. The lateral sepals are connate into a deeply rugose synsepal with a central, conical concavity. A tall lamella is present on the petals above the lower margin. The lip is large with prominent, non-marginal folds at a constriction above the middle. Most unusual is the large callous base beneath that expands nearly to the middle, to which the elongated extension of the column-foot is hinged." Luer 2000
