Common Name The Broad-Tailed Masdevallia
Flower Size 3/4" [2 cm]
Found in Ecuador and Peru in wet montane forests at altitudes of 1000 to 3000 meters as a miniature sized, cool to cold growing caespitose epiphyte and terrestrial, species has been collected with a short, inconspicuous ramicaul enveloped by tubular bracts with oblong, oblanceolate, tapered to the channeled base leaf with the apex emarginate with a central apicule that blooms on an erect, 4 3/4" [12 cm] long, racemose inflorescence with 3 distant bracts and 4 to 9 flowers that all open concurrently and are held at or a bit above leaf height, occuring in the fall. The racemose flowers, the erect, hooded dorsal sepal and the erose, petal apices with a sharp, terminal mucronule separate this species from others.
